Corus Tournament in Wijk aan Zee starts on Saturday. The players in GM Group A are:

1 Alexander Morozevich
2 Daniel Stellwagen
3 Gata Kamsky
4 Jan Smeets
5 Leinier Dominguez Perez
6 Levon Aronian
7 Loek van Wely
8 Magnus Carlsen
9 Michael Adams
10 Sergei Karjakin
11 Sergei Movsesian
12 Teimour Radjabov
13 Vassily Ivanchuk
14 Wang Yue

We will run a competition with a first prize of a downloadable copy of "Rybka 3 Aquarium"! (Worth US 59,00)

1. To participate please respond to this thread, and predict how you expect the final standing to become, when the tournament ends on the 1st of February.

2. Each correct hit, gives one point. (Maximum score is therefore 14 points).

3. Only chess5 members that have signed up before the latest on the 14th of January 2009 (today) are allowed to participate.

4. Each chess5 member is only allowed to submit one prediction (Even if they have multiple chess5 accounts).

5. Two members are not allowed to predict the exact same final list of standing. If this occurs, then only the first post is valid.

6. All predictions must be submitted before the first round of the tournament begins.

7. In case of shared first place between two chess5 members, then the winning prize is decided by lot.

8. I am god and the creator of all competition rules, which I am allowed to change, when I think it is required.

Enjoy :-)

Congratulations atel - great predictions !

And thanks Eydun for initiating the contest. It was fun, promoted the Chess5 website and created some activity on the Chess Forum.

I think regular contributions from admin on topics of interest from time to time, would liven up the forum, and encourage people to check it out on a regular basis, along with the other chess websites they regularly frequent. There seems to be insufficient material just from Chess5 members to keep it very active. Something to think about.

And of course, it would be good if members posted more often on issues that interest them, so other members could respond.

"Well[?] - first off, congratulations to 'Atel' - but what a 'bizarre[?!]' turn of events this turned out to be! I was actually somewhat surprised that I ended up with at least one point at the conclusion of this event, but I was more surprised, expecting at least another point around near the outset. And, Bob[!] - I really thought you had 'it[!]' made towards near the final round. This was very surprising[!]. Then, all of a sudden, this 'Atel' - out of literally from nowhere[!] - just[?!?] - just steals the 'show' ... and ultimately 'ruins[!?]' it for everybody! ...

"This was good, though. It just goes to show you - as in life, for the most part - and as in chess itself ... that you really can't plan for some 'end[?]' - there really are - just moves ... and, perhaps a little 'luck[?]' (near the end) ... That's the way I see it."

Taking stock at the half-way point -
1. only 1 measley point, 3 pts. behind the co-leaders;
2. my # 1 choice, Carlsen, languishes at 50%, with 7 consecutive draws ( taking Leko's place );
3. my choices # 2, # 4, and # 6 are all tied for last ( alone );
4. time for a mid-point beer.
