For my guess as to who would be in the semi's, I only got 2/4 right. Not great - 50 %.

But I did have Boris Gelfand ( Israel ), the eventual winner, as one of them. He now goes into the 8-player 2010 Candidates Knock-out matches, to determine the Challenger for the 2011 World Championship.

Gelfand is a worthy member of the Candidates' Matches. I find him to be a rather colourless player, under-rated, with no identifiable style, except that he is all-round solid. I note that Canadian GM Kevin Spraggett had him picked for a possible winner. He is after-all # 7 in the world, and has been in the top 10 quite a bit over the last number of years.

Congratulations Boris.

Well, for Rd. 4, I got 5/8 guesses right - not too shabby !

After Rd. 5, Game 1, the standings are:

Top Half of Draw

Sergei Karjakin ( Ukraine ? 2723 ) 1 - 0 Shakhriyar Mamedyarov ( Azerbaijan ? 2719 )
Boris Gelfand ( Israel - 2758 ) .5 - .5 Dmitry Jakovenko ( Russia - 2736 )

Bottom Half of Draw

Ruslan Ponomariov ( Ukraine - 2739 ) .5 - .5 Vugar Gashimov ( Azerbaijan - 2758 )
Peter Svidler ( Russia ? 2754 ) 0 - 1 Vladimir Malakhov ( Russia ? 2706 )

Here are my picks to go through:

1. Karjakin
2. Gelfand
3. Gashimov
4. Svidler

If you disagree, what are your choices?
