Canadian GM Mark Bluvshtein is the top FIDE rated player in Canada ( playing for the Canadian Federation ). He is rated 2590. He has just graduated from university, and before going into employment, or futher schooling, he is taking on a " professional year of chess ", and has been playing since September 2010 in numbers of European tournaments. He is being sponsored to some extent by some Canadian individuals and corporations.

He is playing in the third " C " group in the Tata Steel tournaments in the Netherlands - it has 14 players and an average rating of 2507. He is ranked third.

After the 4th round, on Tuesday, Jan. 18, he stands in a tie for 2nd place with Ukrainian chess prodigy, 14-year old GM Illya Nyzhnyk ( they drew in Rd. 3 ). In Rd. 5 on Thursday, Jan. 20, Mark plays the current leader, who is 1/2 pt. ahead of him.

Good luck Mark !!

Bob

This may well be the most important tournament Mark plays all year. A win here gets him an automatic invite to the 'B' section next year where there will sure to be a nimiety of super GMs. At least he hasn't seemingly succumbed to the two obvious distractions (as in puissant pulchritude) in his 'C' division. Lol, some GMs are already 'blaming' said distractions for the absurd chess occasionally being played by the young males in the 'A' division (e.g. Carlsen's dud against Giri and then Nepo's disaster yesterday against Aronian). Speaking of the latter, Bob, I note that there's a new # 2 on the Live Ratings list. And given Aronian simply owns Anand (+6 -0 =8 the past 2 years) there's every possibility that he could usurp # 1 by the tounament's end.
